Recreating a WWII-era Ration Box in Photoshop & Illustrator

July 27, 2018

I recently watched a video by fellow YouTuber “Steve1989MREInfo” where he opens a 1944 Air Crew Lunch ration. I fell in love with the design of the carton and thought it would be a fun project to recreate the package design in Photoshop and Illustrator, and maybe even print it out and put one together myself. Without an physical reference, it’s difficult to make it historically accurate, but the process it was a lot of fun.

This project gave me an inside look at how a packaging patent would have been written, and a glimpse inside the mind of a packaging enthusiast.  Overall, the video combines everything I like: America, history, design, and DIY. Hope you enjoy!

Do you have any plans on releasing the Adobe file? You mentioned it in the video

Can you forward the air crew ration box to me?

Hello, I was very interested in your video on youtube.com with the 1944 Air Crew Lunch graphic production. It’s great work and I like it very much. I am a collector of these WW2 articles, unfortunately I can not get this original box. At least I would like to have this box as a copy. Is it possible to get your file with this box? Thank you very much for the answer and all the best in the New Year 2019.
Sincerely, Jirka from the Czech Republic

    Hello,

I have seen your Video about recreating the Air Crew Lunch box.
I am part of a Reenactment group in Italy that is right now working to create a WW2 Air force museum on the Airfield of Ozzano near Bologna. I was wondering if it is possible to get the File that you made, in order to have a reproduction of this ration for display.
Getting an original is almost impossible and a reproduction would be the best solution.

You can find the Airfield on FB: Flyozzano
Our reenactment group also: Overlord 44

    Best regards,
    Manuel Kaserer
